Ecodesign Regulation 640/2009 on Motors

This regulation establishes the ecodesign requirements for motors, including when integrated in other products placed on the EU market. These measures will ensure that all electric motors that are available on the market are energy efficient.

Following a three months scrutiny period from European Parliament and the Council at the start of 2019, the adoption of Ecodesign Regulation 640/2009 on Motors will take place by mid-2019, with entry into force scheduled for the 15th of January 2021.

The scope of the regulation consists of electric single speed, three phase 50 Hz or 50/60 Hz continuous duty operation motors with rated voltage up to 1000 V and rated output from 0,75 KW to 375 KW (Art 1 and 2). Variable speed drives that adjust the electrical power supplied to the motor in order to control the power output of the motor are also included the scope.

The minimum efficiency requirements (Art 3) are defined as follows:

  • From 2011: Motors ⩾0,75 KW must meet IE2 efficiency level.
  • From 2015: Motors with a rated output of 7,5-375 kW shall reach the IE3 efficiency level, or IE2 if the motor is combined with a variable speed drive.
  • From 2017: Motors with a rated output of 0,75-375 kW shall reach the IE3 efficiency level, or IE2 if the motor is combined with a variable speed drive.

Along with the energy efficiency requirements, manufacturers will have to display documentation (paper or online) presenting all the necessary information.
