Welcome to the NOVEMBER 2011 issue of AMCA Energy Focus, a monthly newsletter that informs members of AMCA International and the public on the latest developments in energy codes, standards, events, and news impacting air systems in commercial and industrial buildings.

International Green Construction Code

Congratulations to the AMCA team testifying at the ICC final hearings for the International Green Construction Code held in Phoenix Nov. 2-6, 2011. There were two significant code change proposals that prevailed at the hearings:
  • Fan efficiency grades for standalone supply, return, and exhaust fans 1 BHP and larger per AMCA 205-10 Fan Efficiency Classification for Fans.
  • Air curtains tested in accordance with AMCA 220-05 Laboratory Methods of Testing Air Curtains for Aerodynamic Performance Ratings are an alternative to vestibules.
Fan Efficiency Grades

AMCA's code change proposal based on AMCA 205 Fan Efficiency Classification for Fans and intended for the IGCC's prescriptive compliance path for buildings 25,000 sq ft and less passed at the final action hearings. The AMCA team at the final action hearings was led by Amanda Hickman, Intercode Inc., and included John Cermak, PhD, Acme Engineering and Michael Ivanovich, ACMA International. The 2012 International Green Construction Code will have the following language when published in March 2012:

             CHAPTER 6

607.2.2.3 Minimum Fan Efficiency. Stand alone supply, return and exhaust fans shall have an energy efficiency classification of not less than FEG71 as defined in AMCA 205-10. The total efficiency of the fan at the design point of operation shall be within 10 percentage points of either the maximum total efficiency of the fan or the static efficiency of the fan.

Add new definition as follows:

SECTION 202
DEFINITIONS

FAN EFFICIENCY GRADE (FEG). A numerical rating identifier that specifies the fan’s aerodynamic ability to convert shaft power, or impeller power in the case of a direct driven fan, to air power. FEGs are based on fan peak (optimum) energy efficiency that indicates the quality of the fan energy usage and the potential for minimizing the fan energy usage.

Add new standard as follows:

Air Curtains

The AMCA team delivered on the change proposal to have air curtains tested in accordance with AMCA 220-05 be used in place of vestibules. Leading the AMCA team was Amanda Hickman from Intercode Inc., and providing expert technical testimony were David Johnson of Berner International and Frank Cuaderno of Mars Air Systems. To aid engineers, architects, and code officials with applying air curtains, AMCA will soon be making AMCA 220-05 and AMCA publication 222-08, Application Manual for Air Curtain Units available on its Website at no cost to the public. (Currently, a download service fee of $4.95 applies.)

AMCA Energy Strategy Workshop: Jan. 25-26, 2012 Chicago

AMCA International is pleased to announce registration is open for the members-only AMCA Energy Strategy Workshop, which will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 25 and morning of January 26, 2012. The location is the Courtyard Marriott - Magnificent Mile in downtown Chicago.

This highly interactive, skill-building workshop will help AMCA members supplement their business strategy by harnessing market demand and regulatory pressure for higher efficiency air systems.

Participation is designed for executives, product managers, and communications directors who influence corporate strategies.

There is NO COST to members, but seating is limited to 40 participants with a maximum of two participants per firm.

AMCA announces 2-hr seminar on air systems at AHR Expo

AMCA's seminar, How to Design High-Performance Air Systems for the Life of the Building, at the 2012 AHR Expo in Chicago will be held on Tuesday, January 24 from 3:00-5:00 pm. The location is Room S101b.

The seminar features four engineering and construction experts providing detailed guidance on how to reduce first cost and operating costs for air systems in commercial buildings.

Engineers, contractors, and commissioning providers will learn about:
  • AMCA's fan efficiency standard and ANSI/ASHRAE 90.1 fan brake-horsepower requirements, presented by Michael Brendel, PhD, Lau Fan;
  • Common and preventable design and construction problems that commissioning providers often encounter, presented by Steve Wiggins, Newcomb & Boyd Engineering;
  • How to green air systems using high-velocity static-regain duct systems, presented by Gene Smithart, Trane, and John Reints, Consultant.
Moderating will be Michael Ivanovich, AMCA International

There is no cost for this 2-hour seminar; registration is included with Expo exhibitor and visitor registrations.
